Good Night

Large groups don’t move quickly, but we got the vans unloaded and everyone is in their rooms for the night. All we did was drive today (and eat), but it feels like its been a long day.

Pray for a peaceful and restful night for us and safety tomorrow as we complete our journey to Birmingham. It is about 100 more miles. We will head there after church and a visit to the US Space and Rocket Center.

Have a great night.

We’re Off!

This morning we gathered together with family members at Trinity English and heard these words from Matthew 20:25-28:

“Jesus called [his disciples] to him and said, ‘You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.'”

We also heard from 1 John 3:18:

“Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action.”

We then prayed:

Dear God, you watch over your people when they go out and when they come in, when they are home and when they are away from home. Come, Holy Spirit, watch over each of our mission trip travelers as they travel to serve you by serving others in Birmingham, Alabama. May they return to us in good health, strengthened in faith, filled with compassion for others, and ready to serve as you call us all out into the world with grace, mercy, and peace. Amen.

Today is a full day of travel. Our destination is Huntsville, Alabama. We will spend the night in Huntsville and will worship tomorrow at St. Mark Lutheran Church, visit the US Space and Rocket Center, and then head to Birmingham.

Please pray for safe and uneventful travel today and tomorrow and that the Holy Spirit would bind us together as one in Christ as we embark on this journey.

Almost Ready!

We leave in the morning, so there have been lots of details to attend to today. Al Hofer, Pam Willke, and Jason and Brent Fugate helped me get rental vehicles from Harlan. Special thanks to them!

I’ve heard from a number of our travelers this evening so I know people are getting packed and ready to go.

Tomorrow we are Alabama bound!

Sending of Mission Trip Travelers

This past Sunday, June 16, 2013, Pastor Haller led our “Sending of Mission Trip Travelers” and anointed those present who are going on the trip with oil.  It was a wonderful send off and quite meaningful for us.

The congregation prayed:

Dear God, you who guide our going out and our coming in from this day forth and forevermore, guide us all as servants of your love and children of God in Christ.  Bless those who will be traveling on this mission trip, and bless those whom they meet along the way, and bless those of us who care for them and pray for them from afar while they are gone.  All of this we ask in the name of Jesus Christ, the one who came to dwell among us and to give us an eternal hope through his life, death, and resurrection.  Amen.

We ask that you pray for us as we prepare for this trip, as we leave this coming Saturday, and throughout the week.  Consider keeping a small stone with you while the mission trip is happening.  When you see or touch the stone, remember those who are being served by the trip as well as those who are going to serve.  Offer a brief prayer of thanksgiving for both groups of people.  We also ask you to consider committing to beginning and/or ending each day of the mission trip with a prayer of protection for the travelers.
