Today we will be exploring San Antonio. We will visit the Alamo and learn about its history.
We will be visiting Mission San Jose and Mission Conception. Mission San Jose was founded in 1720 and was the largest of the mission in the area. At its height it supported 350 people sustained by extensive fields and herds of livestock. The church was completed by 1782. Mission Conception was originally founded in 1716 and authorized by the government to serve as a buffer against the threat of French invasion into Spanish territory from Louisiana. It was developed by the Franciscans. The church building was dedicated in 1755.
We will also visit the Tower of the Americas where we will have lunch and see a 4-D movie about Texas history.
The day will finish with a Mexican dinner overlooking the Riverwalk and then a service of Holy Communion.
Today is all about being immersed in the history and culture of Texas and San Antonio.
This morning we are headed to New Braunfels, Texas, to spend the day at Schlitterbahn Waterpark. It looks to be an amazing place. After the time we’ve spent working together, it is important to decompress and debrief a bit together while participating in a fun activity. While it may seem like fun (and we certainly hope it is!), it is also an important opportunity to “cement” some of the learning that has taken place this week. We will be asking students questions like:
What is your favorite memory from our time serving?
What will you always remember about the experience?
What did you learn about yourself?
What did you see God do in and through you?
What did you learn from our time studying the Bible?
How did teamwork play a part in accomplishing our mission?
How will you stay connected to God when you return home?
How has this experience changed your mission at home, at school, at church?
Tonight we will spend the night in San Antonio. Our hotel is right across the street from the Alamo!
